NJ State Council on the Arts Awards 2008 Artists’ Fellowships and
Adopts New Strategic Long-Range Plan

(Trenton, NJ) The New Jersey State Council on the Arts announced the award of 2008 Artists’ Fellowships totaling $225,900. Thirty New Jersey artists were selected from an applicant pool of 350 artists. The 2008 Fellowship recipients are listed below.

In addition to the award of Fellowships, the Arts Council heard reports from the Arts Education, Planning, Public Value and Grants Committees and voted to adopt a refreshed Agency Strategic Long-Range Plan, which was created in the context of Arts Plan NJ, the statewide plan for the arts. The new Agency Plan is the result of a collaborative planning process that culminated with the solicitation and gathering of public feedback last fall.

During the meeting devoted to the value of professional artists, Steve Runk, Executive Director of the State Arts Council gave an overview of the Council’s programs of support and service to artists. Runk praised New Jersey artists for their vast achievements and the important contributions artists make to communities throughout the state. The Council also received a presentation by Alan Cooper, Executive Director of the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation (MAAF), who talked about the benefits of MAAF’s Artists & Communities program cosponsored with the Arts Council.

Following the business meeting the Arts Council convened the 11th annual Artists’ Roundtable to present learning and support opportunities for artists in all disciplines. The three sessions featured presentations by artists who had previously received Artists & Communities grants, Arts Council Fellowship awards and those who had participated as teaching artists in Arts Council Arts Education Programs. Artists learned from fellow professionals how access to these valuable opportunities and support has helped them advance their careers and positively impact their communities.
